ANTI-CONFERENCE PRE-PROGRAM
Please note that the times listed below are approximate and may vary slightly on the day of the event.
11.00am Registration & Exhibition Open
11.45am Anti-Conference Begins: Opening Remarks - (Jay Schwartz)
12.00pm
Ed Joycey - Evaluating & Exploiting Texts
This presentation hopes to help participants view their teaching use of texts in a different light. 'Evaluating' does not mean examining the difficulty of the texts, or their usefulness for the classroom lesson's aims; it means deciding on the value of the texts for the processing of information and building of knowledge. 'Exploiting' does not mean looking for the language points a text may contain, some of which fit a lesson purpose; it means seeing how the text can be made to fit in with the knowledge readers already have. Lessons using this approach will not have a set framework for teachers to work from, but there are underlying principles to it that offer guidelines that apply to all modes of text presentation. (Literature Theme)
12.50pm
Steve Vassilakopoulos - Arts Junction, Incorporated
An integrated practical approach to using the arts creatively in the classroom specifically incorporating mime, role, play, pictures, music and writing in conjunction with one another. (Integrated Arts Theme)
13.35pm Coffee Break
14.00pm
Oliver Sandon - Why Bother Using Songs in a Language Classroom?
Probably a complete waste of time. Distracts from the real business of rote learning for weekly tests and there are no songs in the FCE test as far as I know. Songs are usually written by drug crazed, over paid one hit wonders anyway. So yes. Why bother? Oh, I'll go over to the talk anyway just to see. Who knows, I might hear Brittany Spears! (Music Theme)
14.50pm
Roger House - Possibilities with Poetry
What can poetry do that your coursebook can't? A practical approach to using poetry as an exam preparation tool! Need we say more? (Poetry Theme)
15.40pm
Jay Schwartz - Acting Up & Acting Out: Drama Activities to Act On
At the center of all drama is communication both at the interpersonal & intrapersonal levels. In this "experiential learning" workshop you will discover some simple & fun drama techniques with masks, movement and voicework that can not only release your students' creative energies, but will also make their language learning experience (and your teaching experience) more personal and reflective. You might even discover what "Linguistic Psychodramaturgy" & "Primal Scream Therapy" have in common with exam classes and young learners! (Drama Theme)
16.30pm
Coffee Break: - Musical Performance by: Vicky Theodoridou & NATARAJA
(Indian Cultural Centre Dancers) - The Magic of Indian Song & Dance
17.00pm
Andrew Wright - Making Stories: Beginners to Advanced
In this session I will concentrate on one main technique for helping students to make stories which: costs nothing, needs no preparation, can be adapted to beginners or to advanced students, leads to a lot of language learning riches. Hand-outs will include a summary of the technique demonstrated and also gives other techniques you can use. (Story Telling Theme)
17.50pm
Luke Prodromou - The Teacher and Visual Art
This presentation describes two ways in which paintings have been useful to me as a teacher: first of all, as a stimulus for learner input into the lesson and, secondly, as a metaphor for the teaching process. Paintings are therefore a tool for student language development and for teacher professional development. From this session, teachers will take away techniques for the classroom but also ways of continuing their own exploration of the process of effective teaching. (Visual Arts Theme)
18.50pm Anti-Conference Ends: Closing Remarks
19.00pm
Wine and Cheese Party:
- Musical performance by the "S&J Experience" - Beatles Jam for Toasted Teachers
